Students Selected as HOBY Representatives

“Congratulations Morgan Hughes from Betsy Layne, Alex Begley from Floyd Central, and Kassidy Blackburn from Prestonsburg! These three are the representatives for the 2021 Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) Seminar,” comments Superintendent Adkins.

Adkins discusses the HOBY program saying, “HOBY is a program about helping young people learn to become strong leaders and to serve their communities. When our young people grow in leadership skills, our world can become better. Programs like HOBY, the National Honor Society, student councils and other leadership based organizations and clubs help students develop much needed skills that aren’t taught as a course in school”

Adkins continues, “Typically, Morgan, Alex and Kassidy would attend a summer session at a college and experience life on a college campus for a  few days as they develop their leadership skills and learn to use those skills to influence their communities positively. With COVID, we are unsure as to how this will look in the summer of 2021 but we are sure that these three will make the most of the experience that they are able to have. I know this because that’s part of why they were nominated; they make the best of things.”

Morgan Hughes is the cousin of Terry and Rachel Damron of Tram.

Alex Begley (FCHS) is the son of Larry Begley of Eastern and Rhonda Begley of Lackey.

Kassidy Blackburn (PHS) is the daughter of Steve and Tina Blackburn of Prestonsburg.

Adkins ended by saying, “Please join us in congratulating these outstanding young people represent our district at the state conference. We’re very proud of them and look forward to seeing how they use their skills to make a difference in our schools, our community and our world.”
